  • This Saturday, the EMILY’s List staff is participating in the 5K Race for Representation for American University’s Women and Politics Institute. We’ve all been training hard and will bring you photos and video next week. The Women and Politics Institute is a great part of AU. Their aim is to help close the gender gap in political leadership and “provide young women with academic and practical training that encourages them to become involved in the political process.” We’re all very excited to be supporting this cause!

  • Many EMILY’s List alum were mentioned in a piece today on the Huffington Post that highlights the lack of female representation in the U.S. Senate. This year is lining up to be another “Year of the Woman” with so many amazing Democratic women running for Senate seats. Sen. Stabenow, Sen. Feinstein, Sen. Gillibrand, and Congresswomen Baldwin and Hirono are all interviewed about their contributions to public service and the voice they hope to lend to the Senate in 2013.
  • "We want our young girls and women to have no glass ceilings in their lives and in their futures. The symbolic impact of being able to look at a woman senator, a woman secretary of state, a woman as a CEO of a company -- as well as seeing women in all parts of society -- sends the message that you can be anything you want to be, and there's nothing holding you back," said Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), who is running for the open Senate seat in her state and would become the first openly gay member of the upper chamber if she wins."
  • Many of our EMILY’s List members of Congress are taking part in the Congressional Food Stamp Challenge this week. The program aims to raise awareness about how difficult it is to have a healthy diet on just $31.50 a week. Congresswomen Barbara Lee, Jackie Speier, and Jan Schakowsky are taking part in the challenge and documenting what they buy and how they eat via their own websites and on Twitter.
  • Sarah Kliff writes on Ezra Klein’s blog about the birth control coverage hearings being held on the Hill today. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius issued a ruling in July that would require health insurance companies to cover the cost of birth control. But there is fierce opposition from many anti-choice groups that are trying to restrict women’s access to birth control. It also is being opposed by Catholic communities that run health care facilities and hospitals that don’t believe in providing contraception.
  • As Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America says, "This is the latest effort to restrict the critical preventive care of millions of women…as I travel across the country, I hear from Republicans, Democrats, clergy and people of faith, and they overwhelmingly support this provision to cover preventive health care."

  • And if you missed the stories on our blog this week you should check them out! Amy wrote about her trip to California meeting with San Francisco District Attorney candidate Sharmin Bock and her meeting with Bock’s predecessor and fellow EMILY’s List'er California Attorney General Kamala Harris. Stephanie wrote a piece this week about the impact of the Indy Star endorsement for mayoral challenger Melina Kennedy in Indianapolis. We’re also still seeing a lot of conversation online about our Q&A last week with Congresswoman Mazie Hirono who is running for U.S. Senate in Hawaii. Be sure to check those pieces out and stay tuned to the EMILY’s List Blog for all the news and excitement about the great pro-choice Democratic women running for office!
