Debby Downer

It’s raining in Florida. A lot.
Tropical Storm Debby is moseying on through Florida at an incredibly relaxed pace, covering some areas in more than 26 inches of rain.
Parts of I-10, the major east-west interstate highway across northern Florida, have been closed due to flooding. And authorities have urged residents in some low-lying areas to evacuate their homes because of the dangerous flooding.
Earlier today, President Obama called Florida Governor Rick Scott to “ensure the state had no unmet needs.” He also said the federal government “stood ready to provide additional assistance if necessary.”
Awesome! The government is ready.
So, naturally, Republicans in Congress step up to the plate with…an anti-abortion amendment.
Folks in Florida are being displaced and losing their homes, and the first thing Republicans in Congress can think of to help is to hold the federal flood insurance program hostage with a personhood amendment.
EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock weighs in, “Seems like Republicans in Congress can’t make it a week without trying to take away women’s rights. But holding up flood insurance at the start of hurricane season with at least two major American cities already suffering is a brand new low. The GOP clearly has no intention of dropping their obsession with rolling back the clock on women – and they don’t care how many families they hurt with their out-of-touch priorities. It’s about time we replace these guys with Democratic women who will put women and families first.“
Debby is projected to continue its slow crawl over northern Florida for a couple more days, dumping more rain as it goes. What families in Florida need right now is flood insurance, not a definition of when life begins. Ridiculous priorities, GOP.
