Her mission isn't complete

Last night, EMILY’s List honored Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords with the We Are EMILY Award for her leadership, dedication and service in Congress.

Among the 450 supporters were more than 40 members of Congress and many of EMILY’s List’s endorsed candidates this election cycle.

It was an emotional night, full of happiness, pride and laughter. Congresswoman Terri Sewell got the party started by welcoming guests and telling her personal story of how EMILY’s List was a critical part of getting elected. She was followed by House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi who praised Gabby by saying, “There is nothing more wholesome to the political and governmental process than the increased participation of women in the leadership.”

EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock saluted Gabby in her remarks, saying “You are what a true public servant looks like.” And DNC Chairwoman and friend of Gabby, Debbie Wasserman Schultz commented later, “It will always be one of the great treasures of my life to have met you.”

But the overall tone of the night wasn’t at all serious. The room was full laughter and excitement. Gabby has dedicated the same strength and determination to her recovery, as she did to her service in Congress. And it was that attitude and character that everyone came to celebrate.

Gabby's mom, Gloria Giffords, who spoke on her daughter’s behalf described Gabby's determination - a quality that her mom said Giffords has had since childhood. Her mom said, “She has the focus of a space shuttle captain - one in particular she’s quite fond of. She knows you don’t leave the ship. She’s not done. Her mission isn’t complete.”

Last night EMILY’s List also announced a new award named in Gabby’s honor: The Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award. This award will honor women who demonstrate the sort of commitment to community, dedication to women and families and determination and civility that have been the highlight of Gabby’s career.
